Practitioner Name: Sonya Berman-Brodsky, PsyD
Title: Psychologist and Sex Therapist
Hello and welcome! I’m Dr. Sonya Berman-Brodsky, lovely to virtually meet you. I have experience working with children, adolescents and adults with a variety of all the challenges that bring us to therapy such as depression, anxiety, trauma, ADHD, relationship issues, transitions and many more. Becoming certified as a Sex Therapist particularly informs my interest working with sexual issues and sexuality concerns as well as a focus on members of the LGBTQ+ population and those struggling with gender identity. I’m passionate about de-stigmatizing sexual conversations and using an “edutainment” approach while teaching society about research-based intimacy facts, in and out of clinical spaces (yes, I love puns). Pleasure is an important part of life (and we wouldn’t be here without sex)…so let’s talk about it!
Educational Background:
PsyD in Clinical Psychology from Immaculata University
Sex Therapy Certification from Sexual Health Alliance
Professional Experience:
I work with individuals experiencing symptoms related to
• Anxiety (including OCD and phobias)
• Depression
• Trauma and stress
• ADHD
• Relationship and intimacy concerns
• Life transitions and adjustment issues
• Emotional regulation difficulties
Therapeutic Approach:
I take an integrative and evidence-based approach to help clients build coping skills, process emotions, and achieve personal growth. My framework includes:
1. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): Helping clients challenge unhelpful thoughts and develop healthier thinking patterns.
2. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT): Teaching skills for emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and mindfulness.
3. Trauma-Informed Care: Recognizing how past experiences shape present behaviors and developing strategies for healing.
4. Sex therapy: Discussion of intimacy issues when appropriate and challenging shameful narratives about sex.
5. Psychoeducation: Using engaging, research-based methods to make mental health concepts more accessible.
6. Exposure and (ERP): Treating OCD and anxiety disorders by preventing compulsive behaviors. Experience treating Avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) with exposure
7. Attachment Theory: Focus in attachment style as it may relate to relational wounds
It is very important to me that my clients feel safe, understood and comfortable throughout our work together, and I focus on creating an approachable, judgment free atmosphere. I strive to make a genuine connection with each person and laughter is often part of that process. Please don’t feel the need to hold anything back as it is all useful as I learn more about you! I’m excited to work collaboratively with you through navigating whatever is bringing you in be it relationship issues, intimacy concerns, increased comfortability with sexual conversations, emotion regulation difficulties, adjustment issues, a mood disorder, neurodivergence, or significant life changes.
Get to Know Me:
Outside of my work, I enjoy trying new recipes, going on hikes, watching psychological thrillers and spending time with loved ones. I also enjoy creating silly educational content related to sex education and psychology (think Dr Ruth…but in 2025).
